Orcon 3rd Party Router Confirmation

Afternoon All,

Just after some confirmation here really.

I'm currently with Slingshot on 100/20 Fibre connection. I have a PFsense & UniFi USG inline setup, has been working fine for months.I've been looking at moving over to Orcon to take advantage of the non-CGNAT setup & "new customer" deals (BS in my opinion.. but anyway..)I've had great service from Slingshot, but unfortunately their offers for existing customers can't quite come close to the "new customer" ones offered by other ISPs.

I've chatted with Orcon's support team with a couple of queries, and one of them was that I couldn't see an option to use my own router during the signup process. The support person said that I'd have to use their supplied unit instead, and I questioned this as I've used my own gear with other ISPs in the past. There's even a page on Orcon's website stating the settings to use for a third-party one.

I've looked into this, and even from previous Geekzone posts, I've come to the conclusion that you can use your own router with the correct settings applied.

Basically I just want to avoid the muck around & extra payment for the delivery for an item that I'll never use if I don't need it.

Thoughts?

Upgrade from basic Orcon modem

Hi Orcon team,

I have the basic Orcon modem NetComm Wireless NF4V.

Is it possible to pay a fee and upgrade my modem to one that's slightly gruntier - even supporting 5GHZ would be great.

Thank you, TehGerbil

DNS breaking on Orcon fibre.

Hey Orcon team,

We've had frequent internet drop outs, lasting for hours sometime.

The internet light was working (mostly) on the router and no amount of rebooting was fixing it.

Thinking back to network 101 - "It's always DNS" I changed the DNS on the router DHCP to 1.1.1.1 and immediately everything was working again.

I am getting DNS IP's from Orcon which don't appear to work intermittently:

121.98.0.1

121.98.0.2

I am able to ping these, but not sure why it wasn't servicing DNS requests for random periods (usually during really busy times in the evening).

Anyone at Orcon able to shed any light on the problem please?

I am happy to keep it on 1.1.1.1 for now.

Thanks for your time.

Weird connection slowdown

Hi,

I have a weird issue. I have an Orcon gigabit connection and every so often, seemingly around 11pm, my connection drops down to 94/94. This is a little annoying as I upload most of my local files to the cloud around this time. In the pictures below, it shows my connection dropping down at approx the same time, albeit being a few weeks apart.

Is there something wrong with my fibre connection? Each time I reboot the modem and even the ONT, but it doesn't help.

Below is the speed I 'normally' get

Any help would be appreciated,

New Deal: Slingshot Unlimited Internet $43.33 Per Month for 12 Months When Taken with Power

Found here: https://www.slingshot.co.nz/broadband10

If I'm on Orcon and think my 12 months is up what would be the best way to try and make use of this offer? do I just call Orcon and ask them to match the rates or should I just jump ship? (and hopefully don't loose internet in the process)

My current plan with Orcon is:

Gigabit fibre for $89.95 and 2 mobile plans but only pay $15 for them (1 x 2.5GB + 300 Mins and 1 x 1.5GB + 200 Mins) and I have power (low plan) with them with a daily charge of: 38.33c and usage per kWh of 30.19c, for 412 units it cost $136.26

can someone explain why my once great connection has now gone haywire. It started about 8.00 am today and nothing i do my end makes it any better. I have rung Stuff but since i dont use their modem , they cant guarantee any speed and wont help me. It is the ping that worries me it is usually around 8, but now can go over 100 in NZ. Is it my end or is it a Chorus problem, stuff did say they had no other complaints so it cant be chorus, I am now stuck and do people think i should wait or keep hassling Stuff, who do admit i have a problem but cant do anything.

Stuff Fibre/Devoli Fibre Speeds

$

Hi all,

I got fibre installed today by Chorus - I'm on Stuff Fibre's Boost connection of 950mbps down and 500mbps up. Unfortunately I'm not getting those speeds, even with the synthetic speed test through the Stuff Fibre Auckland server where I've got only 700/300.

I think there are some strange routing issues on the network. I've tried to download an ISO, from MSDN, and was only getting just over 1mb/s download speeds - for some reason I'm routing to the Puerto Rico server (instead of the more logical Singapore one). If I use my mobile phone (on the Spark network) to create a 4G hotspot, I was getting more like 5mb/s download speeds from the same Puerto Rico server. I've also tried downloading from other CDNs, like Steam and Ubuntu, and only managed a maximum of 6mb/s. For a gigabit connection, that's woefully slow.

I spoke with Stuff support and the chap asked me what speeds I was expecting to get - I told him I'd expect something like 50mb/s from top-tier CDNs and he said "I've never seen it that fast". I had a 300mbps connection, in the UK, and would easily max it out (getting around 30mb/s) when downloading from CDNs.

Since my call with Stuff support, I tried downloading Centos from some NZ-based repositories. I was able to get 50mb/s from one particular server - I suspect it sits on the Devoli network. It proves (along with my SpeedTest result) that the issue doesn't seem to be with the connection Chorus has installed, but is to do with routing and performance on the Devoli network.

Does anyone have any advice or other things I can test? Obviously I've made sure to use a computer connected to the router by ethernet. The router is Stuff's 'upgraded' version so is more than capable of gigabit speeds etc. etc.

Thanks!

Gene

Vocus buys Stuff Fibre

Just received:

Vocus has entered an agreement to buy Stuff Fibre, which has 20,000 broadband customers, for an undisclosed sum.

Vocus New Zealand chief executive Mark Callander says the purchase fits with the company's growth strategy, with Stuff customers joining Vocus' almost 200,000 strong customer base.

'Stuff Fibre is a strong business, with great customer service satisfaction scores, and we are pleased to welcome them into the Vocus fold,' Callander says. 'This is a really positive move for us, we have always been clear that we want to be the telco provider for one in four Kiwi homes - whether that's through a residential service, or through wholesaling services to another retailer - and this purchase helps bring us closer to that goal.

'Stuff Fibre has some great products, such as in-home Wi-Fi troubleshooting, which we will introduce to our existing customers and we'll work to bring Vocus products such as power and mobile services to the Stuff base. In recent years, Vocus has seen considerable growth in bundled offers, with customers recognising the value and convenience of consolidated utilities.'

Callander says buying a business during uncertain times shows that Vocus is confident that there are real opportunities to grow the business in the coming months and years. 'We have grown our customer base by 10 per cent overnight, when these opportunities arise, you need to grab them, just as we have done with Woosh and Orcon purchases previously.

'Fixed line broadband, mobile and energy services are always in high demand, and we remain focused to further increasing our market share in these areas and continuing to deliver an exceptional customer experience.'

Stuff chief executive Sinead Boucher says 'When we launched Stuff Fibre in 2016, our vision was to use the powerful scale, reach and trust of Stuff, Neighbourly and our newspapers to launch new businesses and supercharge their growth. This has proven a successful approach and we will continue to look for new opportunities to do the same in future.

'Stuff Fibre has won numerous best in market awards and reached a significant customer base with 20,000 Kiwis on-board and we are thrilled to see it go into the hands of new owners who can take it even further.'

The Stuff Fibre staff to will transfer to Vocus, Callander said.

The deal completes May 20.

WAN Connection Query - Going from Slingshot to Orcon

$

Evening all,

Just thought I'd throw this out there for some clarification over whether I have my WAN connection correctly set (or not).

Background:-I use PFsense running as a VM on Proxmox. This setup has been running fine for a long time now.-I've been connected to Slingshot via fibre using PPPoE with VLAN 10, plan was only the 100/20Mbps one. -As of very recently, the Slingshot connection method had changed to IPoE (DHCP) instead of PPPoE, however I've held onto my PPPoE connection as I was never told to change it by Slingshot.-Connection was moved to Orcon today on the 950/450 plan, and their website states to use IPoE with VLAN 10 for the WAN settings. I've never used PFsense with a DHCP WAN connection.

Problem: (maybe?)-I changed my WAN settings to DHCP with VLAN 10, but it doesn't establish a connection. I do however receive a WAN IP (as stated under interface details). The "Gateway" remains offline.

-If I change my WAN settings back to PPPoE complete with Slingshot credentials, I establish a connection but with a new public IP address, and the speed is clearly much faster than my old 100/20 speed.-Out of interest, I thought I'd try the Orcon supplied router & it established a connection last night when I was still "connected" to slingshot, and it also establishes a connection now when connected to Orcon. To be honest, I'm not surprised by this at all, however I'm not sure why I can't seem to get PFsense to connect with DHCP & VLAN 10.

Either I'm missing a basic setting in PFsense, or my connection with Orcon/Slingshot is in some weird in-between state at the moment. My internet is working, however I'd like to be using the set method as specified by the ISP.

Is any of this understandable? Probably not haha.

Speed on Orcon 900mbp plan

$

I recently changed to Orcon 900mbp plan but not so impressed with the speed I am getting. Just want to see if anyone here could help me.

The speed I am getting right now is about 100-350mbp download and 300-400mbp upload. I did the testing with a wired connection to my desktop. I have also tried, rebooting the router and ONT, using different cables (both cat5e and cat6), using different computers, making use only 1 device is connected to the router during the testing, using different routers (previously Huawei H659, now ASUS TUF ax3000). However, they are all giving me the same results.

Talked to Orcon about it. While they were friendly enough but didnt provide any good solution.

I think the upload speed seems to be ok, but just cant get over 400mbp for download speed. And most often is only 250mbp.

Any ideas on things I should do or settings i need to change would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Orcon gigabit - is there something strange here?

$

TL;DR - Wondering if it's normal to not reach gigabit speeds to the Vocus speedtest servers via a Vocus (Orcon) gigabit connection, because it's definitely possible to hit that speed via a nonVocus ISP to the Vocus Speedtest server.

Hey all, this is another why is my gigabit connection... thread but with a twist. I was having some issues and noted some strange behaviour after moving to Orcon and joined in on the CDN performance thread which consequently lead to ringing the help desk. The rather script based help desk team lead me towards running speed tests via linetest.nz which consistently showed speeds of 300~400Mbps down. Once I got bumped to tier 2 support, the iPerf ones in the line diagnostic tool produces similar results albeit a bit higher than the linetest/speedtest ones, still <500Mbps down. After 5-6weeks of patience and having tickets closed a couple of times I thought I'd seek some geekzone advice.

What I'm failing to comprehend is why/how running speedtests to the Vocus servers (using the win Ookla app + ethernet) is slower from the Orcon gigabit connection, than a Vodafone one (both connections are in Wellington) - is this a routing/congestion issue? Or is VF traffic somehow got higher prioritisation?

For science and the most apples to apples comparison to take time of day out of the equation, I remoted to a computer on the VF connection and ran speedtests via both connections one after the other. Before the "can your computer handle gigabit" start, I can hit 900Mbit from my computer on either connection. Yes there are some speedtest servers I can get 900Mbps+ from the Orcon connection and because of this, from the support teams perspective there is no fault on my connection.

So to summarise and only looking at download speeds:

Vodafone < Orcon = Fast

Orcon < ACSData = Fast

Orcon < Orcon = not that fast?

Is it just the way it is and I should stop trying to look for an issue? Or is there something strange going on? Keen for your feedback.

Considering a switch to Orcon - anyone with buyer's remorse?

I hesitate to post this kind of thread, but it's been a long time since I contemplated switching my ISP. It's easy to get comfy with your current provider, especially when service is otherwise good, which makes me nervous about the devil you don't know.

Orcon have advertised the Gigantic Fibre plan for $84.95/month for 12 months, and it's even better if I switch using Geekzone Switch (half price for the first six months, full price for the remaining six months, net monthly cost is $80). I'm currently with Spark on a 100mbps plan and a landline for $108, with Netflix included. Even adding a landline to Orcon and paying for Netflix separately it works out cheaper, for gigabit speeds (particularly the upload speeds, which will be nice). I'd also switch my mobile, which is currently on a $40/month plan for a paltry 1GB data, to Orcon's $25 mobile plan for 2.5GB data, and get a $5 discount for having both broadband and mobile with them - saving another $20 and increasing my data allowance by 2.5x.

Pricewise it looks good, but I've never used Orcon so I'm wary of the unknown in terms of performance and reliability. I haven't had any issues with Spark (just their pricing), but it would be short-sighted to save a few dollars only to have to deal with slow or unreliable connectivity.

Are there any recent converts to Orcon (especially in PN) who regret switching?

Re-signing for 12 month contract with Orcon

$

Hey guys.

My 12 month contract is up with Orcon, do they offer deals and bonuses if I were to sign on for another 12 or 24 months? I notice they offer deals for 'new customers only' so I would imagine i wouldn't be eligible for them.

In the past they have offered me a bundle deal with power which is very appealing but will have to wait as I am currently locked in with my current power provider for another 12 or so months.

Prior to this we were with spark for 28 years so the concept of switching to get a deal/re-signing bonuses is quite foreign.

TIA.

Vodafone SureSignal problem on Slingshot

Just happened to notice orange lights on my Vodafone SureSignal v3. Solid red power light and the rest were solid orange. Manual says:

Failed to authenticate with PPPoE ISP. Where customer has locally configured unit to PPPoE, to be compatible with local ISP

Tried to power cycle the unit and now it just won't connect. Fails to get past the pulsing white (2nd) light which indicates negotiating a connection.

Anyone else having problems?

Also unsure if this is something to raise with Slingshot or Vodafone.

Thanks
