help setting up ONT to PFSense

$

Hey all,

I have just switched over to Orcons Gigantic fibre, but their supplied modems are junk and i have a PFSense box that have been using with my previous provider "Vodafone".

But i cannot get pfsense to get my static ip address from Orcon, i set the wan to DHCP and also set the VLAN to 10, priority 0 but it will only give me 0.0.0.0 and not my orcon connection.

I am completely confused into why this is not working and i dont want to have to use the cheap modems that will fail under all my servers, can anyone help me.

Cheers

Gigabit plan, repeatedly rebooting modem fixes DL speed...

Hi,

I've been trying to get to the bottom of the issue but Orcon technical help doesn't seem to "help". For some reason, after a few days, my download speeds go from a constant 940(ish)mbs down to around 420-440mbs. However, rebooting the modem seems to instantly bring these speeds back up to 940ish. I tried to call Orcon technical help but all they could repeatedly say about 10 times was "it's because it's a new online session" over and over again.

I understand that broadband speeds can fluctuate depending on factors such as peak times and other connections on the same node, but why does rebooting the Orcon modem magically bring up the download speeds to 940ish for about a day or two before dropping back down (requiring another reboot to fix the issue)? Does Orcon throttle connections on a specific IP address after a few days?

Also, I'm running a wired connection from the modem directly to my desktop.

Does anyone have issue with Orcon Gigabit Fibre this morning?

I live in Kapiti, this morning my lady at home reported our Internet was down. The interesting part is when I got to the office at Wellington CBD, I can still VPN back home, and my Ubuntu server is happily updating packages just fine.

This is some pings/traceroutes I've been looking at:

I think my access is restricted to Wellington region only. I called Orcon's tech support, the guy thought it was just my router and insisted me to use Orcon's one, otherwise he didn't know what happened.

I mean in theory I could have put some obscure firewall rules to block some but not all of NZ's IPs, but I hadn't touched my router for a while and unless it has been hacked and made to do these weird things, I still think it's probably more a ISP's routing problem. Anyone has any insight?

anyone else getting the wrong bills?

I've just been sent an orcon bill for twice my ~normal monthly cost. This seemed early in the month but I have recently changed to Gb so I thought , meh, could be a new cycle for my bill.

When I checked on myorcon I have a balance of zero.....

I've just twigged the account number is 32935xxx when mine is 2098xxxx.

Speaking of the change to Gb - it's a shame to see the removal of the usage count on the portal. How will I know if I ever reach 1TB/month?

Can't connect Netgear Nighthawk AX12 to Orcon - Fibre

$

Sorry I'm not a tech wizard so please bear with me

We currently have the standard Orcon router for our Fibre connection, however we have 20+ devices in our house - many of them apple and internet keeps crashing.

We bought a Nighthawk AX12 that we were told could plug straight into the Gateway and we would be all good - which is how the current Orcon router is set up. Note - we don't want to use it as a bridge/extender - want to use instead of the Orcon router.

We then spent 5 hours on the phone with Netgear with no luck, also Orcon couldn't help (other than supply our admin login) as it's not one of their routers. And we still cant get an internet connection.

Anyone have any ideas or do we give up and take back to the shop?

Surely it shouldn't be this hard? :(

Thanks heaps

How does SpeedTest reflect the ISP performance - if at all

$

Having moved fro MyRepublic to Orcon in October 2019, I transitioned from download speeds of mostly 900Mbps to 2-300mbps.

I've been working with Orcon for a month and whilst they say their side shows 900+, I have only once seen that sort of speed.

If I run SpeedTest to Stuff Fibre server I get around 900

Same with Uber (Whangarei)

Orcon just sticks at 2-300.

So my argrument is that I am paying for Gig Service but getting much less.

Their argument is that as I get 900 from Stuff and Uber, and that they have tested at 900, my 2-300 test to Orcon is irrelevant (I paraphrase - "ignore the numbers" was what was actually said)

So after finally getting grumpy they tell me if I want to leave I can do so with no penalty.

All I really want to know is

1. does the speed test I run reflect the service I am being provided?

2. would it have been fairer just to charge for the actual level of service?

They are saying options are

1. stay on GIG and suck it up

2. reduce to 100/20 (not sure if thats enough for uploading graphics and videography files)

3. go elsewhere (but be released from the early termination fee).

Any thoughts from fellow consumers out there?

Thanks

Mal

Can I place my internet on hold while renovating and on a fixed term?

So we are renovating for the next few months and not living in our house so don't need internet and phone. I. E. It's a waste of 100 bucks pm.

I rang or web chatted (can't remember which) with someone from orcon and they said I can't place the account/internet on hold without breaking my term.

Is this right? Anyone got any experience here? Is there really not an option to pause my internet connection? I'm totes happy to stay with orcon and have my mobile there too which I want to keep active. Just would be cool to not pay for something I'm not using.

Any thoughts gz?

Help diagnosing faulty/intermittent UFB connection/routing

$

I've been on Orcon Gigabit fibre for the last 18 months or so without any major issues. But yesterday (10th Dec) at around 2:30pm, my internet became severely crippled. Pretty much every website stopped working. I suspect it's a routing issue, but don't have the networking chops to prove that it is.

For example, I can't ping or curl trademe.co.nz , or it's IP (202.162.73.2). Both work fine when I go via an LTE USB modem. However, I can ping & curl youtube (172.217.25.142) just fine. Viewing youtube in a browser kind of works (even searching works) - the page loads, the thumbnails load, but the main video doesn't ever load. Using dev-tools to look at the network, that's because the video itself comes from a different domain something like - r3---sn-j5aa2a0n-jije.googlevideo.com. Which, when I ping & curl, I get no response. Again, going via a USB modem it works fine. Many websites are like this - some of the page might load, but the assets on a CDN may fail.

Checking the router status, it still reported a connection, with the same IP, gateway & dns I've had since I first signed up. Restarting the router & ONT didn't change anything, nor did restarting PCs on the network. My PC & a few others are all wired via ethernet. The same issue was occurring on them all, as well as for devices on wifi.

FWIW My router is an TP-Link Archer C7 v2, running firmware 3.15.1 Build 160712

Ringing Orcon support hasn't got me anywhere as it's a BYO 'modem', and they didn't offer any help whatsoever.

One thing that _may_ have something to do with this, is that I'm scheduled to switch to 2degrees - with the changeover to occur on Jan 14th. When I rung Orcon they have the cancellation as pending in their system (initially they said it was already cancelled, but then they looked closer and verified it was pending with no action taken yet). However, I'd expect anything related to this to be a complete 'disconnect' - rather than the half-crippled internet I have now. I've also called 2degrees just to make sure they haven't jumped the gun on the changeover, and they've confirmed that nothing has been done yet, the date is still Jan 14th.

So I'm not really sure where to go from here. To me it feels like a routing issue - but normally such things resolve themselves fairly quickly (and generally affect multiple users). I'm fairly confident it's not on my end - my network configuration hasn't changed and all devices are getting the same behaviour.

I work from home so this is quite a PITA (thankfully the LTE modem means I can limp onwards). Networking isn't my strong point, so I really don't know where to begin to try diagnose a routing issue - or what I should be saying to Orcon to point them in the right direction. If anyone is able to help in that regard it would be greatly appreciated.

Going for Orcon Internet and Power

$

Hi All,

New here...

We are 2 adults, moving into our new house (renting) 1st week of January. we are in South Auckland (papatoetoe)

i do play online games on PS4 over weekends and youtube and other online streaming websites on weeknights. We both work on weekdays.

Low power users

Did a lot of research on GZ and read a ton of threads. i may finally be going for Orcon (internet & Power).

i see on glimp, orcon is offering Gig at the price of 100/20 & half price for 6 months. plus adding power adds more discount. PLUS orcon support on Geekzone :-)

i dont know if i even need gig, but getting more speed at same price is making me go for it.

Good to go or any catch to this deals?

Thanks in advance...

Is Orcon's 14 months of failing to resolve a VoIP problem a record?

$

Perhaps I could be accused of being far too tolerant in sticking with Orcon for 14 months since their mandatory account upgrade in late 2018, which involved a change from the trusty NF4V modem to a dodgy NF18ACV. The reason given by the lying sales staff employed to pressure me into accepting their new system, claimed it would not work with a NF4V modem. The unwelcome imposition was closely followed by finding, that Orcon's new 'upgraded' account system would not allow me to dial out. The affected numbers were/are unable to dial in as well. Another part of this problem is that many other numbers respond with only one dual-beep ringtone, then nothing, although the distant subscriber's telephone keeps ringing correctly until it is either picked up or times out.

These problems have been dealt with in a most unprofessional manner over the whole of the past 14 months, using everything from the universal ISP escape clause, 'it's your phone's fault', through to 'the modem won't accept firmware updates and needs to be replaced'. All these obvious options, including telephone and modem replacements, along with hundreds of wasted-time resets to manufacturer defaults, have been tried ad nauseum, all to no avail. A logical explanation to an untrained CSR for how the DTMF dial tones proved my phones were not at fault was, of course, dismissed out of hand. Escalation of the case numerous times to the so-called tech teams has always resulted in an email after a few days stating the fault has been fixed, but without any explanation. We're all too dumb to understand, you see? None of those emails has been true.

After many 'new sessions' were invoked at the Orcon side, the fault simply keeps recurring in as short a time as 8 hours, or more usually every 3 to 14 days. Just before New Year 2020, the latest ineffectual CSR on the case unilaterally refused to take the matter further without my providing a list of the affected numbers. These same numbers have been provided up to thirty times already and are available on screen to the CSR. How do I know this? CSRs have read them out to me without my even having to open my mouth, yet the latest script-reading CSR refused to use the data already available on screen in front of him. Vocus, Orcon's parent company, is equally disinterested - there have been no replies to emails or the numerous instances of my 'unsatisfied' negative feedback submitted through their 'Satisfied', 'Unsatisfied', post-encounter surveys. Neither company seems to give a damn. And just to clarify: no monthly payments have been withheld, perhaps they should have been.

Back to the question: is 14 months with a crippled VoIP system and an ISP without the technical ability to find a resolution some sort of a record? Or is my expectation simply too high in NZ's wild-west style, unregulated market place where ISPs arrogantly walk roughshod over hapless customers, and where a Telecommunications Ombudsman is so desperately needed?

NF18ACV modem and WiFi client isolation

Hi,

I've set up a guest network, but it seems like the option to isolate clients doesn't work.I'm on firmware version NF18ACV.NC.Vocus-R6B040.EN.When connected via WiFi I can still see all other connected devices.

Anyone else encountered this issue?I tried disabling then enabling the option and resetting the router, but neither fixed it.

Thanks!

Awful performance on major CDNs

I recently moved house and we decided to uses Orcon thinking it would be a good idea. (previous connection was Spark).

Here's a bunch of screenshots of the awful performance I'm getting on some major CDNs.The worst are CloudFront @ 300kB/s and Fastly @ 300kB/s

I honestly Forgot you could see sub 1MB/s on these services, and my friend running Spark VDSL on a rural connection, gets 1.4MB/s on CloudFront (the same link).Microsoft isn't much better @ 1MB/s. A download that should take 6mins, takes 1H, This is ridiculous.Chorus and Orcon are still faffing around installing our Gigabit connection for the last 2 months, but if I can't saturate the 10MB/s link What is the point? I'm really considering convincing my flatmate to change to a different ISP that isn't awfully slow.

Orcon introduces Fibre 4000 plan

$

Just received:

From today, Orcon customers in select locations can order the ISP's new Fibre 4000 plan - which offers speeds the ISP has labelled 'pretty ludicrous' - potentially up to four times faster than the already super-fast Gigantic plan Orcon offers.

'It's no exaggeration to say this new technology offers speeds that were unthinkable even a couple of years ago,' says Vocus Group consumer and business chief executive Taryn Hamilton. 'Gigabit fibre has to date delivered speeds which make most of the rest of the world green with envy - now we're taking the first steps into the future with a plan that potentially quadruples the previous fastest consumer connection available.'

As the first to launch Ultrafast Fibre Broadband and then the first to introduce Gigabit speeds on the UFB network, Hamilton says being on the leading edge is familiar territory for Orcon as it pioneers another internet frontier.

'Orcon customers want the fastest and the best. We've super-charged our network and this allows us to take advantage of the new top speed on the Chorus fibre network, and we're wasting no time getting that raw speed into the hands of customers.'

Orcon Fibre 4000 is a 4Gbps unlimited naked connection. Given the right set up and conditions, the plan is capable of 4Gbps, but Hamilton warns that the top speed will vary depending on real-world network conditions, the customer's set up and other factors potentially influencing actual throughput.

'We have had staff trialling this new technology, and to be honest, they struggled to find ways to really make the most of the speed and throughput. This tech is actually ahead of any real consumer need, but history tells us that people will find a way to use it - just as they have with Gigabit technology.

'Our Gigantic plan, which provides speeds up to 900Mbps, is Orcon's best seller - and allows people to have multiple 4K streams running at the same time. When we move into an 8K world, the new technology will come into its own.'

Orcon is charging $199 a month for Fibre 4000 with a $199 setup fee, on a 12-month contract.

The UFB network on which Fibre 4000 depends is built and maintained by Chorus. Chorus is initially offering the new speeds in Queenstown in January, with Wanaka, Arrowtown, Cromwell in February, selected areas of Wellington in March, and selected areas of Auckland in May. A full launch is planned for September.

Hamilton says Orcon is placing orders for Fibre 4000 from today and expects customers will be up and running from mid-January.

As for who needs these new speeds, Hamilton says customers who simply want the fastest will be attracted to the plans - whether they are gamers, content creators and design companies, or just anyone who moves big files around.

'At Orcon, we've always made a point of getting the best technology to Kiwis as fast as is humanly possible. And that's why we're proud to be the first to once again crank up the speed limit for broadband in a big way,' Hamilton concludes.

I connected to Slingshot today after getting the text that Ultra Fast Fibre have actioned the change from 2Degrees.

This was at 3.30pm. Apart from 3 speedtests, the only other usage has been facebook browsing on 3 mobile phones.

I was surprised to see that ive already used 3.5 gb in just 10.5 hours today. My plan is unlimited but just surprised id already used that much already.

Doesnt seem right. Im going to nosey my daily usage on 2Degrees to compare. Ive been working remotely from home for 5 hours a day but todays Slingshot usage was after i had switched modems so is essentially just facebook browsing.
