Just received:In time for the month when more Kiwis move than any other, Orcon and Slingshot have today launched a savvy new service to help keep thousands of Kiwis from landing in broadband limbo when they move into a fibre broadband-ready home. Research just released by Kiwi business iMoved.me predicts around 1,000 moves a day in March, but for Kiwis lucky enough to find themselves in a property that can get ultra-fast broadband (UFB), there's a risk they could be offline for some time.Taryn Hamilton, General Manager Consumer (Orcon and Slingshot), explains: 'We have customers who are moving into a new house, see that the house can get fibre, and place an order for fibre broadband. 'With fibre installs already set to take anywhere up to six weeks, what people don't always realise is that if the order hits any snags, like neighbour consents or non-standard build work, they can be left with no internet - and as expected, they can get pretty annoyed, especially if it drags from weeks to months. 'It's an issue that has been troubling the industry as a whole for a while now.' As if moving house isn't stressful enough, the results of a recent survey by Consumer NZ found the biggest complaint with UFB was lengthy installation delays; an issue for 23 per cent of customers - and Slingshot and Orcon data from December supports this finding, showing average wait times for UFB installs to be as long as 67 days. Orcon and Slingshot are proud to have cracked a work-around to keep customers online while their fibre order is being processed, called ADSL While You Wait. 'At sign-up, new Orcon and Slingshot customers can select to get a specially-priced ADSL service ($59.95 for unlimited data) while waiting for fibre to be installed. 'They won't be weeks without a connection - a temporary ADSL connection will get customers online within 5-10 working days and we'll switch their connection to fibre as soon as the install process allows,' says Hamilton. 'Fibre is the best technology available - it's fast and reliable and we strongly encourage our customers to get it if they can. We know there are some barriers to getting connected, which is why we've come up with an interim solution to make the transition to fibre as smooth as possible.' More than a third of Orcon and Slingshot's new connections are on fibre. 'While the industry as a whole has a long way to go to streamline fibre install processes and solve the lengthy delays that come with it, we're stoked to be able to offer a solution for customers who are prone to having a pretty terrible experience - and at a time where volumes will be higher than usual,' says Hamilton.

Fibre and Phone
So, elderly mother is going to have a go at getting fibre installed. She would like all the phone jacks working as they are currently due to one phone in a garage at the back of the section, i don't think a cordless handset will reach this far. First inspection is on Wednesday.Based on my install they like to install the ONT near a power plug and a phone jackpoint so they can wire one of the jackpoints directly into the ONT.She doesn't have any jackpoints near any power plugs. What is the best approach for this, will the installers run another cable to a new jackpoint, or is there another approach? We 100% don't want any trippable extension cables or the like lying around.Anyone have any advice?

Fibre sign up - Slingshot
So today i checked the handy Chorus website and as of today fibre is now ready on my street!I upgraded my plan on Slingshot My Account from ADSL to Fibre. Has anyone done this process yet? (online - not calling) I just wanted to know how long the process takes? I live in a standalone house that is not a shared driveway so I assume this will take a chunk out of the process as there is no need for consents etc. They also offer a "rental" modem. Does this mean it costs after 12 months? Can I use my own Fibre capable modem? (HG659)

UFB+phone line problem
I've just got myself upgraded to UFB. I'd like to keep the phone line. My plan was to use my existing Netgear R8000 as the router directly and connect an ATA for phone line, as Slingshot uses VoIP.Before the chorus guy came I called technical support asking for my SIP password. The technician told me the password is only available after cutover to fibre.OK. So after the chorus guy finished everything I successfully configured R8000 to connect to internet. Time for another call to Slingshot for the SIP password. This time I got told that since I did not order a Slingshot modem (NF4v) I cannot have a VoIP line. The VoIP line is bind to the modem and cannot be provisioned on its own. The only way for me to have a phone line and keep my old number is to use GoTalk, and that's an mobile app only thing and cannot be used as SIP.So before I bite the bullet and decide to go naked, can someone answer the questions below. Is it true that I cannot have phone line without a slingshot modem? Can I configure GoTalk with SIP so I can use it with an ATA?Thank you very much.

Connecting Asus AC68U with Netcomm NF4V
We recently had fibre installed. Slingshot sent us a Netcomm NF4V router for the connection. Unfortunately Chorus technicians severed our copper phone line when they installed fibre. So our phone goes through fibre. And Slingshot's solution is VoIP. The phone is delivered through NF4V as you may have known. NF4V is a good router. But it's not ideal as the engine of our home network because of its(lack of) processing power and some lack of functionality. For example, copying a file to/from a USB harddrive attached to NF4V gives you 4MB/s, mediocre wifi coverage, VPN, DDNS, etc. I decided to use a more powerful, more configurable Asus AC68u to be our main router. After a few days of confusion and banging my head, I got it all sorted. I'd like to share my experience in case someone might need to do the same thing.Goals:1. AC68U to provide internet connection and Wireless Access.2. Phone(VoIP) works. Because AC68U doesn't have the ability to handle VoIP, we still need NF4V to provide phone service. Some other people on Geekzone suggested SP122. But that's $100 I don't have. Besides why do you want to spend extra money when NF4V can deliver decent phone service?3. Devices connecting to both AC68U and NF4V can see each other. Preferably they are on the same subnet. Otherwise some devices may have trouble discovering resources shared on another subnet. For example my TV will have trouble detecting Plex running on my PC.Warning: Always backup your working router config before making any changes. Or you may feel sorry if you can't restore something. For example I still haven't figured out how to add two PPPoE devices in NF4V after deleting them. The only way to get them back is by restoring from backups.First challenge: connect to internet using AC68U. This is well covered in other discussions on Geekzone. It took me a few hours to figure it all out though. I won't repeat the steps here. Because I want to combine AC68U LAN and NF4V LAN as the same subnet, I disabled DHCP on NF4V. Also I only need AC68U to provide wireless, I disabled wireless on NF4V.Second challenge: enable VoIP service. Because I'd like to make the whole home network in the same subnet, I thought I could connect LAN on NF4V to LAN on AC68U and route all traffic through AC68U like I do with my PC. This works for the PC if I set the gateway to AC68U. But VoIP seems to go through WAN on NF4V. Adding default gateway using an AC68U's IP doesn't work because 0.0.0.0/0 is considered illegal by NF4V. So I was unable to get it to work. Turning NF4V into bridgemode doesn't help either. It could be because my settings were not right. But I couldn't even get to the internet when NF4V was in bridgemode and AC68U's WAN connected to ONT directly. However this exercise tells me I can create different types of WAN interfaces. To do that I also need to delete all existing WAN interfaces: ADSL, VDSL, Fibre. Finally I find out that I can create a WAN interface on eth4. eth0 - eth3 on NF4V are LAN ports. eth4 is the WAN port. When creating this WAN interface on eth4, DO NOT use any PPP type. Just assign an IP to either manually or through DHCP running on AC68U. Once this is done, the world suddenly brightens. Now I connect the WAN port on NF4V to a LAN port on AC68U, a couple of minutes later, the phone LED on NF4V lights up. Phone is at my service!Third challenge: combine AC68U LAN and NF4V LAN. Because I want them to be on the same subnet, I turned off NAT on NF4V. But I can't connect to NF4V LAN from AC68U. However if I change the LAN on NF4V to another subnet, turn on NAT, and add a static route in AC68U, then devices on AC68U can access those that link to NF4V. Trouble is TV is not happy. Then I realise I just need to treat the four LAN ports as a switch for AC68U. So I assign an IP in AC68U's subnet to NF4V's br0. Connect a LAN port on AC68U to a LAN port on NF4V. Then devices on both AC68U and NF4V can see each other. At the moment there are two links between AC68U and NF4V: WAN/NF4V <-> LAN/AC68U and LAN/NF4V <-> LAN/AC68U. VoIP goes from NF4V WAN to AC68U LAN. Everything else goes from NF4V LAN to AC68U LAN. From AC68U, we can access internet.Mission accomplished!

IMAP with SSL advertised but not supported (and broken) on Slingshot.
Unfortunately I have been dealing with Slingshot recently due to their broken IMAP SSL server which has meant one of my clients has stopped receiving email via IMAP on the majority of their devices (those with SSL enabled).I have spent 3+ hours on the phone communicating the issues with Slingshot, along with emailing debug information showing their IMAP SSL server not giving out a certificate, meaning it does not work.I have replicated this issue on multiple email clients at multiple locations.A Slingshot rep has also replicated this issue at their end.To top it all off my client was emailed stating the issue was resolved last week. Today I have been informed (and later confirmed for myself) that the issue is not resolved and that the IMAP server is still not working with SSL.Today I was also informed that as email is not supported Slingshot will not fix this issue. If you no longer want to fix your own email server when it is broken then please DO NOT OFFER IT.If you no longer support IMAP with SSL then please do not give these settings out on your website!

Fritz 7490 and Slingshot Fibre
Hello all. I have searched but unable to find anything so hopefully someone can help. Fibre is about to be installed in our area and I am currently with Slingshot. I don't have their stock standard cheap ass router but have a Fritz 7490. Slingshot don't provide a lot of help for people with non supplied modems. Can anyone guide me through the setup process in the 7490 for Fibre and phone settings on the Slingshot network please. I realise I wont have the phone details and login at this stage, but if a general guide is given what and where I need to do the settings that would be greatly appreciated. I have a spare 7490 that I will start the setup process on so when fibre is installed I can just drop it into place, put in the phone number details and hopefully away we go.

Change Plans
HiHow exactly do I go about changing plans on the slingshot website? I currently have 100/20 with landline for $100.95 but don't need the landline anymore. When I remove it from the website, the price only comes down to $94.95 while on the home page I see the price is $84.95.Under my account I am seeing this alternative pricing:https://www.slingshot.co.nz/assets/files/SS-Fibre_100-20-Naked-alt.pdf?v0.10.21And when I am not logged in I see:https://www.slingshot.co.nz/assets/files/SS-Fibre_100-20-Naked.pdf?v0.10.21Is it not possible to upgrade to these new plans? And the other question is regarding wiring insurance. The website says its recommended but the help page only mentions it covering broadband and phone line so is it actually needed for a fibre connections? Thanks

Contacting Chorus or options for increasing broadband speed
Hi all,I have recently moved house away from my lovely urban fibre connection to ~1km out of Te Awamutu where I now have limited internet. I'm running out of ideas with my internet connection and I'm hoping that someone can put me in touch with the right people to talk to, or give me some options I may have missed So far I have tried...- Wireless broadband with the local supplier Lightwire. Unfortunately according to the installer to get a connection I would need to cut down 2 trees on my property to enable a possible line-of-sight to the tower, install a mast out at a particular point in the paddock to get on that created LOS (and then conduit back to the house), and then it would only work for a couple of years because the LOS passes just between 2 large trees several properties over which are expected to grow and block the signal.- Wireless 3G/4G with Vodafone/Spark. There is no usable Spark signal and an intermittent 1-2 bars of Vodafone. As an aside I am having to run a Vodafone SureSignal to get reception for my work cellphone. I have tried a Cel-Fi unit but it doesnt work with the layout of the house. The little bit of reception I can get is located at a window in the middle of my house so the Cel-Fi can only boost it for one side of the house.- Fibre. Fibre has been laid directly past my driveway to the local rural school ~7km down the road. Upon inquiring with Chorus via Slingshot they responded it would cost $25k to connect to it, and I would also have to run the line from the gateway to my house. So not a financially feasible option for me. ...Which leaves me with Slingshot ADSL. I have had it recently connected and am currently on a whopping 2-3Mbs (enough to get the SureSignal working). The technician that Slingshot sent was very helpful and told me the speed was because I am connected to a cabinet in the centre of town ~6km away rather than a closer one 1.5km away on Fairview Rd. The one on Fairview Rd apparently needs upgrading before I could be connected to it, and if it was upgraded I would get much higher speeds and maybe even VDSL . He said I could ask and see if there were any upgrades planned in the future for that cabinet. I have contacted Chorus and inquired about future cabinet upgrades and they have been kind and responsive but said that a request needs to be made by an ISP. So I contacted Slingshot and they also have been kind and responsive but said I should contact Chorus directly. And now I'm going round in circles.... So, does anyone have any contacts at Slingshot or Chorus who would be able to look into this for me? Possibly get it moved up in priority? Several other people on the road are in almost the same situation as myself and are very interested in getting faster internet options if they become available. Thanks very much,Michael

Random question about UFB
So we have just had a change of plan to what slingshot calls Gigantic. This happen at 6am this morning as the network went down and came back online about 6.10am. Running a speed test this morning it seems to only be giving a max of 220megs and under 100 up. Router is a RT-AC68U (which is a Gigabit router). Tested from a wired machine directly into the router.Do the ISP's have to change something on their side to give the 700 - 900 down and 400 - 500 up?

NF4V or Dm200 Bridge to ASUS RT-AC88U
Hi all, Im in a bit of a jam and can get my internet configured correctly. Im trying to get my router (RT-AC88U) Bridged to either one of these VDSL Modems (Netcomm NF4V or Netgear DM200). My slingshot internet Coneection is PPoe and the DM200 connects fine by itself untill i change it to bridge mode with the AC88U, Which has the slingshot usename/password entered. If i go to the network map it shows that the internet is disconnected, If i change the wan to static ip and have it on the same subnet as the modem ip (192.168.5.1) it shows internet is connected but computers or devices have random connectivity to the internet. Its much the same with the NF4V but once connected the computers connected have constant connectivity. The problem is the AC88U is double NATed and i want to use the features of the router but cant in the current config.

Switched from Slingshot ADSL to VDSL - having trouble with getting modem to play ball
Have had a good trawl through the forums and gone for a deep dive into Google, but can't seem to answer my own question, so here goes:Was on Slingshot ADSLGot upgraded to VDSL and confirmed on TuesdayBought my own modem (TP-Link TD-W9980 N600) but couldn't get it connected to VDSL using the Slingshot-supplied settings, so figured I'd wait for the supplied NF4V modem and connect that to help see what I was doing wrong before swapping back and fixingNF4V arrived yesterday, and plugged it in. I get internet again now, so that's good. But....I think I'm still getting ADSL. Speeds are the same, and settings in the modem look weird. So I called support, and they checked the line and definitely VDSL, and I was advised that the 'WAN Service' section is just for fibre, so not to worry about that.So I left it at that, and figured I'd leave the NF4V in and wait the 10 days for DLM and see if it improves. But the more I think about the less convinced I am so thought I'd ask the experts. This indicates that ADSL is connected, and VDSL is not, right?I tried to connect the pre-loaded VDSL connection, but it just didn't connect, so I deleted it and reinstated (per above) and same result. And when I just try to do a Basic Setup to set up VDSL (same credentials as ADSL), I get the following error:"DSL Interface Configuration ErrorPlease double check your configuration information...." Am I doing something obvious that's wrong? Or do I need to call them back?Or is everything fine and I should just chill?

Slingshot Gigantic Plan
I have a I7-6700k cpu and a decent gigabit capable motherboard and my router is a dlink dsl4320l. I just got switched to gigabit fibre through slingshot today and have only got speeds of about 190Mb Download and about 200Mb Upload speeds. Using a wired connection from the ONT to the Dlink using cat 6 cable. Can someone tell me what is up with that before i call slingshot again. Cheers

Slingshot fibre slow
Hi AllCan anyone suggest why my download and upload speeds are so slow on slingshot fibre. We are staying at a friends place for a few weeks in Christchurch near Northlands mall and sometimes the connection is painfully slow. At other times it is acceptable. This one is 8:30 on a Wednesday evening. I had one that only made it to 0.79Mbps. Quite often my cellular connection is many times faster. Its not a good advertisement for slingshot for when we move into our new house. CheersSteve

Slingshot Upgrade to VDSL from ADSL - Island Bay
Hi Everyone,I am looking for some technical advice as I am struggling with providers in the Island Bay area. I am up on Volga Street in the hill and I am in the process of being upgraded to VDSL. This is through Slingshot.I am currently on ADSL and my line test from modem are giving me the following:Downstream / UpstreamSNR Margin (0.1dB): 7.8 / 8.8Attenuation (0.1dB): 35.6 / 10.5Output Power (dBm): 19.5 / 9.3Attainable Rate (Kbps): 12664 / 1108Rate (Kbps): 11660 / 1029I tried to have VDSL installed three years ago and basically ended up having to revert back to ADSL. The line was too poor. This resulted in no internet and a lot of backwards and forwards for a week or so. Coincidentally we have an engineer in our office today doing our telephony system and network. He had a look at the above and said "You have no chance of getting stable VDSL on that".I currently hold little to no hope that when I get home VDSL will be up and running. (It is due to be installed today) I will let you know how things progress...Doing research online there is a lot of people saying getting master splitters can help. (But I have no clue)Also what are my options? Can I pursue Chorus or anything to get the lines to the house improved etc (I am quite a way back from the road in a house built back in 1990 so am unsure on how good the lines would be).Any help, advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.Richard

Slingshot internation video streaming speeds - just horrible
Slingshot must be doing some masive throttleing of streaming video from international sites. It is basically impossible to watch a video (for example from Microsoft Virtual Academy) without video stopping and buffering every 5 seconds. The problem is especially bad in the evenings.I have been with slingshot for over 15 years now - and this got to be the worst that I've ever had it.Streaming the same video over a VPN tunnel through one of the free VPN providers - streams smothly.I'm on unlimited ADSL plan.Makes me seriously reconcider my continious commitment to slingshot.

[VDSL] DSL/Internet drops off random and resets/reconnects itself regularly
Hi all, Recently moved house and have installed VDSL over the original ADSL that was at the place. The speeds are definitely higher and where they should be based on my experiences with ADSL and Fibre. Approximately 5mb downloads constantly. The problem occurs where randomly the internet/DSL wants to drop off and then it reconnects itself as if the system is resetting itself. I had this problem years ago with Slingshot ADSL and I changed from their standard modem to a Draytek Vigor and ASUS RT-N16 combo which fixed it ever doing this same kinda of problem.I am still running the standard ultra VDSL / ADSL2+ Netcomm Wifi Modem it comes with, is there something not configured properly or are these standard modems being supplied just bad? If so potentially looking at the Draytek Vigor 130 to solve all the problems Cheers,
