Am I Really on VDSL?

$

As per topic, am I connected correctly or should I save some $$ and go back to ADSL?

VDSL went live on 11 Aug (8 days ago as of this posting). I have a master filter that was fitted about 1.5yrs ago by the Coffeebaron, which took my ADSL2+ from just over 10mb to 19mb dwn and 2mb up.

My download speed has gone up to 25mb (speedtest.net yields consistent 23mb - an OK increase over ADSL), but my upload is only 1mb (and it struggles to get that on speedtest.net, usually 0.9mb).

I went to VDSL2 as all the marketing material states the upload speed can be 5mb up to 15mb. And I really want a faster upload speed for cloud backups.

I found a speed comparison on Truenet (granted a few yrs old now), which shows that if I am within a km of the exchange, I should be getting roughly 5mb upload - truenet.nz/story/2012/12/speed-comparison-vdsl-vs-adsl; but as you can see I am not.

NB: This sparks another question: Should I even have been offered VDSL?

Slingshot tells me to wait for the DLM to do it's thing, but my connection has not changed since day one. OK, i have two more days until the 10 days are up, but I have my doubts.

To add it, I emailed Chorus asking "what gives" and they tell me I am on UCLL, and not even connected to their network (as confirmed by checking my address on their site); their email -

With regard to your query, I have checked your address details and it looks as though you are not completely connected to the Chorus network. It looks as though you have a UCLL connection, which basically means that the lines leading from your local exchange to your house belongs to Chorus and are being used by your broadband provider. However the equipment in the exchange itself, where the information is processed and sent to you, belongs to your broadband provider/other supplier. Because of this we are unable to comment on the quality of service you are receiving. I would recommend getting back in contact with your broadband provider to investigate this issue further for you.

Is this how it is supposed to work for Slingshot VDSL2?

Now, I don't want to bash Slingshot, but I find their tech support, well, unsupportive. I feel they do everything they can to make it my issue so they don't have to actually do anything.

Any advice would be appreciated.

VDSL stats attached.

Thank you in advance for your time.

How do I get my IP address to change?

I'm getting constant captchas from google and other sites, and I think it's because I happened to be assigned a blacklisted IP. I can't seem to shake my current IP though. I've tried disconnecting the modem overnight and it's still the same IP. Is there any way I can force it to refresh?

Slingshot traffic shaping on NZB - any point going to UFB?

Hi there,

I'm still on copper, and get 13MBps on a good day. However I've noticed that my NZB downloads, which used to get to 1.3MBps now sit at 68Bps, meaning I'm getting about 5% of the speed I used to. When I test my speed on testmy.net while downloading the NZB then during the random data download my NZB speed shoots up close to previously experienced speeds, and then rapidly goes back down after the speed test completes..

My supposition, and I'm open to being challenged/corrected on this is that this is clearly traffic shaping from Slingshot, my ISP.

I get and accept that at certain peak times traffic is shaped, but this seems to have extended to near 24/7 in my case.

My question is - having recently had UFB come to our street, is there any point in upgrading? Am I likely to experience the same type of shaping on UFB?

If I was a conspiracy theorist - which I'm not - I'd say the shaping I'm experiencing is a tool to incentivise UFB uptake.

ADSL but no dial tone

I unscrewed a jackpoint in a bedroom while painting on Friday night, didn't touch any wires etc. screwed it back together but now i have no dial tone on any jackpoints, yet ADSL is ok, maybe a little slower than normal. I also have workers on the street putting fibre down the road so I'm not sure if something there would have caused the problem.

Don't use the phone often so i'm not sure when it stopped working.

Have tried different jackpoints, new filter and an old non cordless phone, all with the same result.

Anyone have advice before i call slingshot or someone else to look at it?

I don't need the jackpoint in the bedroom i only use one jackpoint in the house for a phone.

How to limit traffic to certain devices on our network, on the supplied UFB modem from Slingshot?

Hi there,

I just signed up to UFB from Slingshot, and am trying to set up some QoS on the supplied modem, so that I can limit the speed to certain devices on my network. However, the page for setting up a QoS classification is complicated, and I'm a bit out of my depth. I'm not even sure if I've selected the correct options, let alone if I'm on the right page.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

New UFB Install - Wireless Device Connection Problems

Had Fibre installed in Christchurch on Friday; went without a hitch. The whole process was quick and easy, no problems. The installer was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and very confident.

Install was a small 3m trench from boundary, fibre pulled about 6m under the house.

The speeds are great; a monumental increase from my previous service. As soon as the installer left there were intermittent wireless connection issues; the Slingshot provided modem/router services a laptop, Sky decoder, an iPhone 5C and a Motorola Moto G all within 15 feet of the router. We spend most of our time in the lounge, so we don't often have any walls between the router and the devices.

Diagnosing the lost wireless connections on the laptop pointed towards not connecting to a DNS server. Sometimes the connection fixed itself, other times a restart on the computer or modem fixed the issue. Over the weekend, the connection to the laptop and my Motorola seems more stable, but there are continual disconnections with my wife's iPhone. Her total indifference to our internet service has now changed to 'WHERE THE HELL IS THE INTERNET???!!!'

My house is 200m from the cabinet down the road.

Optical light has always shown solid green, LAN1 has always been solid green and the wireless does its flickering.

All software and firmware are as up to date as they can be.

I've emailed Slingshot, does anyone have any suggestions?

ADSL internet performance issues

We have recently switched to Slingshot and have been experiencing internet performance issues. We live well past the max distance that ADSL is supposed to work, however it was been working for the last 9 years. In the past when switching providers we have had to get them to change interleaving as we kept dropping out of the network. Slingshot have said they have checked this and to be honest it's not dropouts this time.

The internet has been going really slow to the point where pinging Slingshot takes 188ms and the download speed test reached a whole 0.6mb...on a good day this is around 3mb (used to be around 7 a year or two back ).

I have noticed that we are getting a lot of rx CRC errs but no tx CRC errs - since rebooting an hour ago we have had 5463 RX CRC errs.

We have spoken to slingshot on numerous occasions and they have said that they have tested and there are no errors.

The router is connected to a dedicated jack - I had this done so we did not need to use filters and the alarm could work when we built the house 4 years ago.

I have put another router on the network and replaced the cable between the wall socket and router. It gets exactly the same issues.

If we could have switched to a better network we would have but we are in a dead spot when it comes to service options.

Poor latency to sydney from slingshot (but not other networks)

I have noticed recently (in the last 6 weeks or so), bad latency to Sydney (where many game servers are hosted..). I was previously getting around 30ms on fiber. Typically 3 to Auckland from Hamilton.. etc.

Can people post some tracert's to the following Amazon host to see what you are getting? 54.252.183.4

CallPlus SIM card and iTegno GPRS

Can anyone explain why I cannot get an account Call Plus SIM to work with a iTegno 3800 GPRS device? This issue to me appears related to account SIM cards as it will work on a Voda Prepaid SIM OK.

I also tried my Spark account SIM card also with no success. I have yet to try a Spark Prepaid, but I'm thinking there is some setting in the system present in account SIM cards that blocks no phone devices while prepaid are open.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

What modem/router for VDSL?

$

Ahoy,

I'm looking to move some relatives to Slingshot. They can get ADSL and VDSL where they are, but what modem/router does Slingshot supply these days? Brand/model? If it's a VDSL one, can it also do ADSL? Does Slingshot do a full VDSL install (splitter, etc)?

Despite searching Slingshot's website I couldn't find the modem information anywhere...

Thanks

Slingshot Router for new accounts

I signed up with Slingshot recently and had them ship a new router the Netcomm 300N.

I have duly set it up the range of the thing sucked big time, and now due to very sucky wireless I have discontinued using the router and gone back to one that is older but has better range.

The range I needed was only about 20 feet through 2 walls nothing was interfering. I was getting -80dBm now with older router I get -50dBm according to Wifi Analyzer app.

Has anyone else had this problem and is my New Slingshot router faulty???

Slingshot mobile - 4G capable?

I'm looking at moving from 2 degrees to slingshot for my mobile provider as I live in the country and 2 degrees is very inconsistent. I test the coverage with a temporary Spark sim and even though I only got 1 bar on my S7edge I had continuous coverage and even 4G mobile data!

Slingshot use the Spark network, so I'm just wondering if they can offer the full services and benefits of that network?

Fibre dropping out all the time.

Hi

I have been on Slingshot fibre for quite a while now with no problems. the last few days the connection seems to be dropping out. I ended up factory resetting the router and since the my work VPN has not worked. Has anyone any ideas on what router settings might have been affected by the factory reset?

In addition the system log on the Netcomm router shows problems? I don't suppose anyone understands what this all means?

Broadband hasn't worked for days. Using Vodafone station from previous ISP, supposedly need original username and password?

$

The broadband hasn't worked for a couple of days in our apartment. Complicating matters is that it's rented out to guests at the moment, although we'll be there next week.

Although we're with Slingshot, we used to be with Vodafone, hence the Vodafone Station as the modem. However, it didn't seem fundamentally incompatible, working fine for months until now.

We've got the property manager to turn it on and off, try it in different jackpoints, and the finally a factory reset. Slingshot have done line tests and haven't detected any issues. She's also tried it with a second modem, which hasn't worked either (although it is also a similar Vodafone one).

According to Slingshot technical support, for the factory reset we also need the original username and password that we got when we first set up the modem? I have no idea how we'd find this, though. There doesn't seem to be a default username and password for the station (that works), either.
