Slingshot VOIP failures with NF4V

$

I'm using a NF4V on Slingshot UFB, I was originally supplied with the horrible TP150 and upgraded at my own expense and had assistance from SS in setting up the NF4V.

One of the problems I had with the TP150 was VOIP randomly failing, in that both inbound and outbound calls are met with the "engaged" tone. I thought this had been fixed on changing router, but over the last few weeks it seems to have come back. All will work fine for a couple of days, then on trying to make a phone call, engaged tone. Resetting the router or going into VOIP settings and disabling then re-enabling the SIP account clears the problem, but it's quite annoying having to do this.

Anyone else seen this? Any tips on what it might be caused by? I haven't contacted SS about it recently because I hate going through the scripts, factory resetting the router, losing all my static IPs etc etc.

Speed/connections in evening

In the evenings my speed drops from over 10 Mbs to 7-8 Mbs and the connection graph turns into a saw blades teeth. Chorus check my line and gave me a new clean line today but same again this evening.

Anyone got a suggestion what I should now do to get this resolved?

Thank you.

Salesperson fibre installation subsidy?

$

Ok, mother got called from slingshot a couple of days ago asking if she would like to upgrade to fibre. No special deals, just offering the upgrade as fibre is now available in her area. Standard contract terms and prices etc. Slightly more expensive than her current ADSL setup.

She told me the caller mentioned 2 things that i have questions about.

1. The government is subsidizing the installs into peoples homes and if she didn't sign up she may have to pay for the install.2. The copper network wont be available in the future and she may be left without phone/internet.

Sure copper may be unavailable in the distant future but i think that will be a while away yet. I'm not sure about the subsidy comment as i haven't heard it before.

Do these sound like reasonable comments from the sales person? I would prefer to go through the fibre upgrade myself and see the process before getting her to do it, but I'm a few months away yet.

Port Fowarding Tripleplay 150

Anyone else had issues with portfowarding with SlingShot and Tripleplay 150?

If I check a port number from a site such as http://www.canyouseeme.org/ I always see the port is "blocked".

I've tried many different ports with the same problem. Slingshot say they can't help me as they aren't trained in port forwarding and I need to contact the manufacturer.

NAT virtual servers all look setup correctly to me.

Anyone in Hamilton able to answer a couple of questions for me - UFB

Hi all,

Dinosaur 1 & 2 are getting UFB with slingshot.

If I recall the installation is done by WEL networks not Chorus ( please correct me if I am wrong )

Installations I have seen around their neighborhood look to be of very good quality that I can see.

Is anyone in the area able to tell me if they get their phone from the ONT or the router?

Are they still using Netcomm NF4V routers?

Has the phone been fed into the house wiring or just plug in a cordless into the ONT or Router?

Thanks in advance.

John

Do Slingshot do VDSL master filter install?

$

Hello,

Looking at going to VDSL. The local wiring is pretty old with many jackpoints daisy chained, so think we would benefit from a master splitter.

Do Slingshot normally organise this for a new install? When you sign up there is a no cost option "would you like a technician to help you setup". Is this 'help' going to be to plug the modem in and turn it on, or is this the guy that will do the master filter/splitter wiring?

Thanks,Dan.

Is there a better modem for Slingshot than the supplied Triple Play?

After a very rocky start I have been with Slingshot for over twelve months and have recently reviewed my ISP options and decided that they were all much the same overall in service and price. I decided therefore to stay with Slingshot (the package I want is 40GB+Land-line (Fiber installed) and a mobile phone at the most cheapest rate). I am using the modem supplied - Triple Play - but wondered if a more specialized one would offer me a better connection. Can you Gurus out there comment, make suggestions? Thanks.

Can anybody advise what the model/brand model Slingshot supply (I've seen a few references in the forum but unsure if they are for fibre or VDSL installs)?

Any feedback re the modem or whether to roll your own than take the ISP supplied model?

Well played the designer who snuck that one in lol.

Slingshot UFB Teamspeak + Gaming problems

I recently upgraded to Slingshot's UFB and have ran into a range of problems that are really enraging to me.

First off want to say that the connection is stable, fast (getting 75MBS over wireless) and for normal things is very good.

HOWEVER i play alot of online games as well as use teamspeak, mumble and discord for voice comms with them. Mumble works fine(most of the time), as does games like EVE Online the problems come when i want to use teamspeak/ Discord and play other online games. I have read that my router (Netcom NF4V) has firmware issues with Teamspeak so i moved to using discord everything seemed fine but its just the same. The connection quality degrades to the point where it drops 100% of the packets DC's just like teamspeak does. I also lag out when playing more needy games like H1Z1 where dropping packets is more serious.

I've switched channels on the WIFI and done the other basic stuff as well like port forwarding etc but the problem seems to come from the router itself not the wifi connection or whatever.

What else is there that i can do before i have to sit there an argue with a helpdesk guy only to be sent a new router that is worse.

P.S Before people ask, i am using TP-LINK TL-WN821N on n mode. I cannot use a cord as i'm a good 10m from the router, the wireless connection is full bars no issue there.

Hi all,I need help on Slingshot Fibre connecting and disconnecting every few seconds.Issue started just after 1am Thursday early morning.I have tried to reboot and power off my router, and the ONT as well.I do notice the optical light on ONT seem to blink in steady manner (like left/right car indicator), if I remember correctly it show solid green light.I have called Helpdesk on Friday morning but when I followed up yesterday was told ETA 5 working days.Anyone experienced this around Thursday and manage to get it sorted?Thank you.Below is log from my router.----Jul 24 04:27:36 ntp: start NTP updateJul 24 04:27:36 miniupnpd[8785]: version 1.9 startedJul 24 04:27:36 miniupnpd[8785]: HTTP listening on port 35104Jul 24 04:27:36 miniupnpd[8785]: Listening for NAT-PMP/PCP traffic on port 5351Jul 24 04:27:46 pppd[497]: Connected to 84:26:2b:63:b9:71 via interface vlan10Jul 24 04:27:46 pppd[497]: Connect: ppp0 <--> vlan10Jul 24 04:27:46 pppd[497]: PAP authentication succeededJul 24 04:27:46 pppd[497]: peer from calling number 84:26:2B:63:B9:71 authorizedJul 24 04:27:46 pppd[497]: local IP address 101.98.48.16Jul 24 04:27:46 pppd[497]: remote IP address 101.98.0.94Jul 24 04:27:46 pppd[497]: primary DNS address 202.180.64.10Jul 24 04:27:46 pppd[497]: secondary DNS address 202.180.64.11Jul 24 04:27:46 rc_service: ip-up 8801:notify_rc start_firewallJul 24 04:27:47 start_nat_rules: apply the nat_rules(/tmp/nat_rules_ppp0_vlan10)!Jul 24 04:27:47 wan: finish adding multi routesJul 24 04:27:47 rc_service: ip-up 8801:notify_rc stop_upnpJul 24 04:27:47 rc_service: waitting "start_firewall" via ip-up ...Jul 24 04:27:48 rc_service: ip-up 8801:notify_rc start_upnpJul 24 04:27:48 rc_service: waitting "stop_upnp" via ip-up ...Jul 24 04:27:48 miniupnpd[8785]: shutting down MiniUPnPdJul 24 04:27:48 WAN Connection: WAN was restored.Jul 24 04:27:49 pppd[497]: Connection terminated.Jul 24 04:27:49 ntp: start NTP updateJul 24 04:27:49 pppd[497]: Modem hangupJul 24 04:27:49 miniupnpd[8843]: version 1.9 startedJul 24 04:27:50 miniupnpd[8843]: HTTP listening on port 45470Jul 24 04:27:50 miniupnpd[8843]: Listening for NAT-PMP/PCP traffic on port 5351Jul 24 04:27:53 WAN Connection: Fail to connect with some issues.Jul 24 04:27:53 DualWAN: skip single wan wan_led_control - WANRED offJul 24 04:27:53 stop_nat_rules: apply the redirect_rules!

Did anyone succeed getting through to the support lately?

I've been on the phone for last hour waiting to be coonected to a support rep. The internet line (adsl) went down at around 1am and has not been up ever since. Tried two different modems they both refused to connect so i think its a line problem.

How do you get this stuff sorted? Last time I contacted them by email/website i got back an email directing to call them if there is still problems, but the are not answering the phone? ( like "we'll be with you shortly" for more than an hour)

Any positive Slingshot stories?

I am wanting to migrate my parents away from a very expensive combination of Spark Landline with Caller ID, Call Minder and Fax-ability $70.70 p/m, Vodafone(previously Clear) Tolls and Mobile Calls averaging $40 p/m and Grandfathered Xnet WXC ADSL $60 p/m + 1.29 per GB! averaging $110 per month for around 55GB usage for a Total spend averaging $220 a month!

They are on a 10 Acre block in Semi-Rural Chch so Fibre will likely never be available and VDSL reports as being available via online checkers however I think it would be hardly worth it or probably not even possible with Line Attenuation of 17.0db. The current ADSL2+ performance is certainly satisfactory at ~10Mbit Download

Im with Bigpipe myself and very pleased with their service, but my parents want/need a POTS line for Alarm & outgoing Fax still, (no longer require incoming faxes on a dedicated number or caller ID) Not worth upgrading the alarm panel or teaching my Dad how to scan and use email at this stage to be able to move them to voip. Was planing on moving everything onto Slingshot with their very competitive $70 Unlimited Internet and phone line. but looking at posts on their Facebook page and on here there seem to be quite a few negative opinions for various reasons, https://www.facebook.com/SlingshotNZ/posts_to_page/

Bearing in mind that people only usually speak up when they have a problem so just wondering if anyone can provide some positive reports to alleviate my fears that this may be a bad move? Or recommend an alternative option for me?

Cheers

Slingshot Family Filter

Just received:

Three quarters of Kiwi parents are concerned their children may have access to online pornography, yet fewer than a third use online parental controls. New Zealand ISP Slingshot has introduced an easy online tool that blocks the darker corners of the web and helps protect Kiwi kids.

The biggest concerns parents face around internet safety was their child's exposure to pornographic sites and 'other' inappropriate material, the Perceptive Research revealed. What's more, 40% of parents think their children might attempt to access R16+ sites, while 16% have already caught their child looking at inappropriate material online.

Taryn Hamilton, General Manager of Slingshot, says all parents want to keep their kids safe online, but there's a general lack of understanding how to. To help put parents' minds at ease, Slingshot has launched Family Filter - an online tool that blocks inappropriate and dangerous material.

'With the simple switch of a button, Family Filter gives the control back to parents by blocking access at a network level, encompassing all devices connected to the home Wi-Fi. While we can't bubble-wrap our kids, we can certainly put measures in place to help mitigate online risks and bring the topic to the surface,' he says.

While 90% of Kiwi parents surveyed think they have a fair idea of their child's online behavior, only a third actually check their child's web history and more than half of parents reported that their children access the internet from their bedroom.

Family Filter removes access to:

R16+ nudity and pornographic sites

Known hacked or infected websites

Sites featuring: dating, drugs, gambling, alcohol, tobacco

Websites about hacking, dark web and other illegal activities

Suicide and self-harm.

'Gone are the days of having one family desktop sitting in the lounge - our children are now surfing the net across multiple devices. It's important that all parents talk to their kids about internet safety, but thanks to services like Family Filter, we can feel a little more secure in restricting the sites our kids can access,' adds Hamilton.

Further research by Middlesex University, in June this year, found that of 1,001 UK children aged 11 to 16 years, more than half had viewed online pornography and of those, nearly 60% reported seeing online pornography for the first time at home. Interestingly, while some children chose to seek out online pornography, they were just as likely to come across it by accident.

Rebecca Daly-Peoples, Auckland based Clinical Psychologist, adds the real danger is that young people, including teenagers, often believe that what they see on the internet is real.

'Young people typically do not have the emotional and psychological capacity to process this information in healthy ways and early exposure to inappropriate sexual content can lead to premature sexualisation and unhealthy ideas about sex and relationships.

It's important all parents have open conversations with their kids about the material they might encounter online; but it's equally important to have a means to filter explicit and dangerous content so that kids are not coming across it by accident,' she says.

NetSafe, which provides cyber safety and security advice for New Zealand, recommends three key ways parents can help prevent children seeing online pornography: install an internet filtering programme or use a filtered internet service, teach children about good searching skills and talk to them about the images and things they may come across, and how to deal with them.

'Family Filter is available for free to all Slingshot customers for the first 12 months and can be easily accessed and activated through a Slingshot customer account. Customers can turn Family Filter on and off whenever they like, giving parents complete control over when they restrict access to R16+ sites. Switch it on when the kids get home from school and turn it off again when they go to bed,' adds Hamilton.

Not sure what's going on here over the past 48 hours or so, VDSL has been pretty faultless since installed a couple of years ago. Normal speeds have been about 45/8.5.For peter reader's benefit, yes I've reset router, it's connected via ethernet, there's nothing else downloading (I've turned wifi off), router settings haven't been touched, Chorus set the VDSL up with master splitter. I shifted the access point, but that's been fine for over a year.

It has been dropping to below 1Mb/s and very choppy, Netflix etc basically unwatchable. I think the SNR and attenuation figures are the same as they've always been. It's possible that someone's dug up or damaged cables in the area, shifting holes in the ground from one place to another has been pretty common in the area we live since the Chch quakes, but I'd have thought that if that was the case, I'd have seen that in router stats below.

Sometimes if I try to access router settings via web interface, it's very slow to connect - as if the router isn't responding.

I don't have a spare VDSL router around to try. I'd been thinking about buying one, but fibre is only a few months away, I'll switch to that as soon as possible.

As I was about to post, I thought I'd run speedtest again:

That's back to normal. I hate intermittent issues. I'll post this anyway as I'm guessing the problem will return.

Slingshot homepage connection issues

Hi, here's my problem.

For the last few days I've been unable to access the Slingshot homepage. Pretty much just the homepage, and the help pages, and the visibill site. The page connection times out on every one with the "The server at slingshot.co.nz is taking too long to respond" message.

However, when I connect through a foreign proxy, I can access these pages no problem.

This happens on all browsers and devices on the home network (i.e. Slingshot mobile app). Resetting router has no effect. I don't have any viruses or anything, at least I've never heard of one that only blocks you from your ISP's homepage.

It's almost as if the page is being blocked for my IP and my IP alone. It's like Slingshot hates me or something.

The internet works fine otherwise. Except for - Youtube. The site loads, but videos most often do not, not without substantial delay. This happened at the same time.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm open to them. I'm guessing it might help to have my IP changed?

Anyway, thanks for listening.

VB204 Settings for VDSL

Hi all,

Dumb question time...But hopefully someone from Slingshot can help out.

I was setting up my son's router over the phone over the weekend and was changing the DNS addresses to an unblocking service so they can do the usual Netflix USA thing with their Roku. We couldn't get the addresses to register and the SmartDNSProxy site kept telling us the DNS was not set up properly. Long story short, we just could not get it going even after factory resetting router and loading the backup file we made.

I decided to get him to install Team Viewer so I could log in remotely (he's in Christchurch and I'm in Auckland). Anyway, after doing a bit of checking in the DNS tab, I discovered that the PPPoA interface was active and the PPPoE was not and was showing as disconnected. As soon as I set up the DNS servers on the PPPoA interface everything worked.

My question is this: what is the correct interface for VDSL? Slingshot's site says PPPoE and my routers have always been setup with this for my previous VDSL connections. My son called the Helpdesk and was told that they are definitely on VDSL (they are only getting 11mb download and 1mb upload...which sounds suspiciously like ADSL to me...). I was going to change it on their router but then realized if I did and they were in fact on ADSL then it wouldn't work anyway.

Can anyone shed some light on this and advise if I am correct or if i am actually just talking bollocks?

Cheers.

adsl username "firstcontact"?

Hi all, a friend and a co-worker has a Netcomm modem from Slingshot.. It's locking up constantly, so I'm recycling a new one for him.. Problem is he doesn't have a clue what his ADSL username and password is... So I've got into his Netcomm and the adsl username is firstcontact@slingshot.co.nz which is totally unknown to him... I'm trying to save him from calling Slingshot as he's not the most tech of guys, but a nice one!

Is that firstcontact email a sort of "set me up" alias?

We think this modem is 2nd hand sent to him form Slingshot, it wasn't well packaged, and is overall very basic...

Thanks,Craig
