Routing path to Sydney Hurricane Electric is crap

Hi,

In a bid to get ipv6 for some testing I've been doing on Slingshot UFB I setup a tunnel using a tunnel broker service by Hurricane Electric.

Their server is in Sydney and I noticed Slingshot have a crappy path so wondering if anyone there can comment / look?

Via Vocus IP Transit at work the path goes via Vocus Connect International Backbone and is around 30ms round trip to HE Sydney.

At home, it's around 160ms round trip because a weird megaport hop.

Non Technical Support from Slingshot

After the recent Auckland storm and a 2 day ADSL outage my ADSL line speed has dropped by 1Mbit/s From 4MB/s to 3MB/s. We are rural just north of Albany. I have done the house wiring / master filter checks.

I asked Slingshot technical support to investigate and they lodged a fault with Chorus. This is the reply I received

"Looking into the fault close off notes, I can see that the Chorus technician has advised that the download speeds that your connection is currently physically syncing at of 2-3Mbps is what you are to expect. The technician has advised that as you are over 3 kilometres from the cabinet, these are the expected speeds with which your connection will sync at.

To maximise your wireless connection, you can try cycling through the Wi-Fi channels to find which one offers you the best connection/. I have included instructions on how this can be done below:"

The points are

1) The line speed was faster before the outage (I suspect DLM changing the acceptable noise margin is the cause)

2) Neighbours 300m (line distance) closer to the cabinet are get 7Mbits/sec

3) And giving advice to change the wifi channel _screams_ _shakes head_

Any idea how to proceed ?

Thanks

Netgear Orbi with gigabit fibre

Just bought the Netgear Orbi router. Gigabit fibre is here. Wanna use it instead of the NetComm NF4. Plugging Orbi directly to the ONT, Download speed is 400mbs, upload speed is 20mbs. Plugging Orbi to the NetComm modem, download 400mbs, upload speed is 400mbs. Why do I get slower upload speed if I plug my Orbi to the ONT instead of netcomm modem? Do I need to change any setting in my Orbi router?

Is slingshot worth joining? Good or bad?

Hey I'm looking at signing up to Slingshot as they are advertising a 50% off code for 6 months which brings their gig plan down to an average of $75 for a years contract.

Is it worth signing up to? Are they any good? Any issues?

Cheers

I'm considering switching to slingshot as they have a deal online for the first six months free which makes their 900/500 plan an average of $75 a month!

Would you recommend them? Thanks so much!

Family Filter blocking legit sites

A family member is using the Family Filter service from Slingshot. Just recently it has started blocking legit sites, sites that were never previously blocked. It's making their internet almost unusable.

Is there anyway to change the settings to unblock these sites?

New SS UFB Install - Q about POTS over the ONT

$

Hi there,

My sister in law recently had SS UFB installed. the ONT and the Router are about 1m away from the head of the bed in the main bedroom (not ideal!). This has resulted in poor wifi to the rest of the house because of the location of the router. I notice that the phone jack is connected to the router meaning If they wanted to shift the router more centrally, they would need to get a phone cord extension. My UFB install has the phone plugged directly into the ONT, not the router.

Is it possible to connect the phone to the ONT in my sister in laws case?

Next to the ONT, there's a new phone jack and two wires (blue/white) feeding to/from the old style phone jack right next to it (presume this is why the ONT is where it is and presume this is the wiring that livens up the old copper jacks.).

Hopefully, I've explained myself well enough. I can't help feeling this install wasn't planned very well :) (not SS's fault)

Thanks!

Slingshot gigabit fibre YouTube connection problems on 2.4GHz WIFI problem

Hi Geeks

I'd like your help on the next step finding a workaround for this problem. I'm not familiar enough with NZ fibre or this model router so I'd love your input.Ok I have 900down, 500mbit no cap up slingshot fibre. Its great. Except for one isolated situation:On 2.4Ghz wifi only, YouTube only, the connection is absolute crap. In fact its the media from youtube that stops working. The text on pages and stuff comes through, but with missing thumbnails and videos periodically pause.Youtube on ethernet: fine.

Other sites on wifi: fine. The WIFI's physical connection is solid. There is no wifi interference and i can happily browse other sites on the 2.4GHz while youtube is choking. It also happens on more than one device: and iphone and an android. Now a PC hooked on to the 5ghz wifi is just fine from what I've seen.

I've phoned up slingshot and if you saw the other thread I briefly described the service droids i suffered through until a third rep advised that theres a firmware problem with the modem they give out marked as giving these symptoms. My questions are as follows:How can I disable any brain damaged processing the slingshot router is doing to the packets? I am thinking does this modem try & fail at QoS?

Does anyone else here have this issue? Can anybody think of creative workarounds? And considering this is a known, persistent fault - shouldn't slingshot have an obligation to provide a working service? Shouldn't I be made aware of this problem before spending money? And when i report the symptoms, are the reps properly reporting the severity of the problem to management? Considering I went through two staff members that should have known to attribute my connection's symptoms to the known fault - I'm not dismissing the possibility that this is worse than believed or reported.

How do the power prices stack up against the competition?

Thank you

Will a Slingshot Sim, work in a Spark phone?

Hi, does anyone know, does a slingshot sim work in a spark locked phone?

I live just out of town, and I have had to change to Slingshot from 2 degree's, as currently am on 2 degrees but I get no coverage in my house at all. Rang 2 degrees and spoke to someone in the call centre, who said that they didn't have any kind of booster or anything and that my only option was to change providers.

Hence the move from 2 degrees to Slingshot.

I have to buy my daughter a phone, but have a spark phone at home, so was wondering if the sim will work in it? I have seen lots of comments stating that 2 degrees uses Spark etc, so can anyone assist?

Can't receive email from single user gmail->slingshot

I'm trying to trouble shoot a weird email problem for my parents who use slingshot as their isp.

There is one sender who uses gmail who's messages never get delivered to the slingshot account. (tried multiple devices)

The slingshot account can send to gmail, but replies dont get delivered 99.9% of the time. I have see a one word reply come back, but messages with more than a single word don't (it's only once I've seen a reply, most single word replies dont get delivered).

I've checked using the slingshot webmail interface to see if it is something client side - nope. I've checked the slingshot web interface for filters - nothing.

The sender is my son, so I'm pretty sure there hasn't been anything malicious going in.

I can only guess that there is something flagged in a spam engine at the slingshot end that is dropping these message - can't think of what else it could be.

Any clues?

Dave

Speed dropped once on unlimited ADSL

I was on the 250gb plan and my connection was 12 mbps now on the unlimited plan it is only 6 mbps.

The "better network" gave me the 12mbps after i was on their normal equipment at 4mbps. This now is no better.

I'm paying for the "better network" not a normal speed, i might as well start shopping around.

Slingshot please reinstate my speed. please.

Slingshot services take 5 days to be activated but 30 days to cancelled. this is not fair !!!!

I switched my broadband services to another ISP two weeks before my slingshot billing cycyle.

then I called slingshot today to cancel my broadband service but I have been told that it will take 30 days to cancel my services.

here is the wording

"Please note that as per our terms and conditions, we do require 30 days notice for cancellation requests. We recommend cancelling at least 5 working days before your bill date to avoid further service rental charges. "

as I already switched to another ISP, that means I am paying two broandband services for this month.

:(

according to slingshot site, it only took 5 days to activate account.

https://help.slingshot.co.nz/hc/en-us/articles/360000054054-Fibre-Frequently-Asked-Questions

but it will take them 30 days to be cancelled?

Auckland fibre outage this morning

Hi there,

Our apologies if your UFB connection went down this morning - all services are now running normally. Our engineers are carrying out work overnight to help prevent this happening again. There will be a short disruption of service at around 2am for Auckland fibre customers while they undertake the work. If you're still down in the morning, reboot your modem and you should be good to go. Thanks in advance for your patience!

Cheers!

Apart for the big outage the other day, do anyone else in Central Auckland notice some random drop in fiber connection lasting about 5 min at times. Seams to happen often at the moment.

NF4V Virtual servers

$

Hi all

I have a slingshot supplied NF4V modem router from ADSL days. I am now on a fibre contract.

I have some virtual servers setup for port forwarding. The problem is there are none listed. If i add a "server" it returns to the server page but the list is empty, If i add it again it says it already configured.

Tech support wont support the "Virtual servers". I ok with this but the missing list is the issue. If i want a new modem i have to break my contract ($250 fee) and re sign up for 12mths, plus $15 courier.

Anyone else have this problem?

Cheers

Bot scam calls

We've had a few scam phone calls today from a "Spark" person about broadband.

Usually, convo is along lines of "(long pause) Hello it's xyz from spark" ( long pause) " how are you today?" (long pause) "We are calling about your spark broadband" (pause) <disconnect>

Pretty sure its a Bot auto dialing numbers.

Looked up the caller IP and it's coming from Callplus and source phone number showed Singapore country code, and France country code.

Tried to call Vocus to let them know to do whatever blocking they need to. Got after hours message, then hold music then hung up from their end.

Anyone else had similar things today?
